Sawadee krap from Thailand

| by Kenneth Tristan André |

Sorry for not updating the blog for a long time. There have been so much to see and discover that I need time to process everything.

Since leaving Darwin, on February 14th, we have been in Indonesia (Bali, Gili Islands and Yogjakarta), Singapore and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). Much can be written about these places but I choos to skip them as Stian already have several pages ready to be uploaded.

To give you a very short summary:

Indonesia: Crowded, noisy, beautiful beaches, cheap food, lots of motorbikes and scooters, friendly people.

Singapore: Busy city, expencive, lots of shopping, many tourists, cheap electronics and cameras, Sands Marina Bay Hotel.

Malaysia: Good food, cheaper than Singapore, cool hostel, anoying cabdrivers, lots of shopping, Petronas Towers, Reggae Mansion Hostel.
We also got a visa for China in 4 days here, much cheaper than back home in Norway.

After spending a few days in Kuala Lumpur waiting for our visa to China, it was time to enter Thailand.

Air Asia has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Krabi and Phuket every day, and we had our eyes set for Krabi as my uncle and aunt has a house there.

After an almost two hour flight we landed in Krabi as the only international flight at that time of day. I guess there was about 120 passengers on the flight, but still we had to wait in line at immigration for over 45 minutes! They where working extreamly slow that morning, even though there was 3-4 lines open. When Stian and I passed there was still 30-something people waiting in line!

On the other side my uncle and aunt was waiting for us together with Keo, a thai friend. Since immigration took forever we where followed shortly by more members of my family, arriving from Norway via Bangkok. My dad and uncles coussins, Kirsti and Norunn, and Norunns husband Rune.

After we emptied the ATM for bath (thai currency) we all headed for Ao Nang where Kirsti, Norunn and Rune was booked in to a hotel close to the beach.
A few hours later it was time once again to go to the airport, to pick up my coussin, Vibeke, and her boyfriend Jason. Stian and I headed for the house with Keo while my uncle and aunt picked up Vibeke and Jason.

The days was spent relaxing at home close to Ban Nai Sa or at the beach in Ao Nang, swimming and getting a massage. One day Stian and I desided to take a tour around Krabi to see the Tiger Cave Temple, Emerald Lake, Hot springs and go on an elephant ride. We walked the 1237 steps up the Tiger Cave Temple in the heat. I almost died slowly seeral times walking up the steep stairs, but Stian almost ran up like a mountain goat.

One day there was a party going on in the garden. Over 100 people from the village came up to have a chat and eat food (prepared by muslin neighbours). It was quite a sight seeing them prepare the food, stiring the curry and rice with a big oar.

A few days later we all rented a minibus and headed for Phuket Island and Patong Beach. Here we had planed to do a day trip out to Phi Phi Island, but ended up getting clothes made at a tailor and getting a tattoo instead. Way cheaper than getting one done in Norway.

After a few days in Patong we took the bus up to Bangkok to meet up with Sissel and Marion who will join us to Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.

To be honest Bangkok is a horrible city, with a lot of trafic, eager taxi/tuk-tuk drivers, massage places and dust. Only reason we spent a few days here was to apply for a visa at the Embassy of Myanmar.

The positive thing about our stay in Bangkok, was to see familiar faces again. I also got a supprice, as my friend Camilla suddenly showed up in Bangkok to say hi. To bad we had such a short time together, but catching up with friends is always nice. Who will be the next of my friends and family to stop by?

It was nice to relax for a few days and spend time with my family before heading to busy Bangkok and then on to our next destination, Myanmar.
